Shopify Scripts Are Gone: How to Charge Fees and Surcharges Now
Shopify Scripts stopped running on June 30, 2026; editing and publishing had already ended on April 15, 2026. If you are looking for a Script replacement that charges a fee, the first thing to know is that Scripts never could. Shopify’s own documentation says Scripts can’t add items to the cart or increase an item’s price, and can’t increase a shipping rate’s price. Scripts lowered prices, adjusted shipping options, and renamed, hid or reordered payment gateways. A fee or surcharge needs a different tool, and that was already true before the shutdown.
What did the three kinds of Scripts do?
| Script type | What it could do | Closest Shopify Functions API today | Can that API add a charge? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Line item scripts | Change prices and grant discounts, never upwards | Discount | No, it creates discounts |
| Shipping scripts | Change shipping methods and discount shipping rates | Delivery Customization | No, it hides, moves and renames delivery options |
| Payment scripts | Rename, hide and reorder payment gateways | Payment Customization | No, it hides, moves and renames payment methods |
The Functions APIs are the official successors, but they follow the same pattern: none of the three above adds a charge. The Delivery Customization API cannot change a delivery option’s price at all, and the Payment Customization API only hides, moves and renames payment methods (plus payment terms on Shopify Plus).
How do I find out which Scripts my store used?
Shopify keeps a personal report of the Scripts that were active before the shutdown:
- In your Shopify admin, go to Apps > Script Editor.
- In the Replace your Shopify Scripts banner, click Replace Shopify Scripts.
The report lists the customizations by area (payment gateways, shipping, product discounts) and links to the Functions documentation or apps that can recreate each one.
Could a Script charge a fee or surcharge?
No. The rule “Scripts can’t add items to the cart or increase an item’s price” rules out both ways a fee could appear: as a new line or as a higher price. Shipping scripts could not raise a shipping rate either. If your store did collect a fee while Scripts were running, the fee itself came from somewhere else, for example a product the customer added, prices that already included it, or an app. Those keep working after the shutdown, and the Scripts part (a discount, a hidden shipping option) is what needs replacing.
What replaces a surcharge today?
The options for adding a fee are the same as before, minus Scripts. Our guide How to add a fee to a Shopify order compares all seven in detail. In short:
- Shopify’s own features: a handling fee on carrier-calculated shipping rates (hidden inside the shipping price) or optional tips. Neither collects a required fee as its own line.
- Building your own app with Shopify Functions: a developer can use the Cart Transform API to change cart lines. Shopify limits this route: custom apps that contain Functions run only on Shopify Plus stores, and overriding a line’s price or title also needs Shopify Plus. The Cart and Checkout Validation API is often mistaken for a way to add fees, but it can only block a checkout, not add anything to it.
- A fee app from the Shopify App Store: FlexiFees works on every Shopify plan, with no Shopify Plus requirement and no developer. It adds the fee as a separate line in the cart, with your own title, whenever the cart matches your conditions.
Can I still charge a surcharge for a payment method?
Not with Shopify Functions: the Payment Customization API can hide, move and rename payment methods, but it has no operation that adds a charge. FlexiFees cannot do it either, because it has no payment-method or shipping-method conditions. Its 35 conditions cover products, the cart, the customer, and dates and times. Before you look for another route, check whether card surcharges are allowed where you sell: the rules vary by country and US state.
Which FlexiFees setup replaces common Script-era workarounds?
| What you wanted | FlexiFees setup |
|---|---|
| A handling fee on orders under a threshold | Cart fee, Fixed, condition Cart subtotal is less than or equal to your threshold (small order fee guide) |
| A surcharge on certain products | Per product fee, condition Product tags or Product type (heavy item surcharge) |
| A fee that wholesale customers do not pay | Add Customer tag is not one of wholesale (waiving fees) |
| A fee only on weekends or in a season | Day of week or Date range (from/to) (rush order fees) |
