Shopify fee apps, compared honestly
Last updated: July 18, 2026 · Feature summaries reflect public listings on this date; verify current details on each app's listing.
Shopify has no built-in way to charge a fee, so a small category of apps fills the gap. The four things that separate them: breadth of conditions, calculation methods, how the fee appears to customers, and express-checkout protection. Here is where each app fits, including where a competitor is the better choice.
What to compare
- Conditions. Can the fee target state, country, tags, collections, metafields, weight, discount codes, dates? Compliance fees live and die by targeting.
- Calculations. Fixed and percentage are table stakes; cost-based (COGS) and per-kilogram are rare and matter for tariffs and eco fees.
- Presentation. A real line item shows in cart, checkout, and on the order, satisfying itemization laws; checkout-only widgets can be invisible in the cart.
- Express checkout. Buy It Now skips the cart; without protection, mandatory fees can be missed.
The comparison
| App | Focus | Calculations | Targeting breadth | Express checkout |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FlexiFees | Conditional fees of every kind, with regulatory presets | Fixed, %, % of cost, per kg | 34 condition types incl. metafields, HS codes, origin, dates | Opt-in Buy Now guard blocks checkout without the fee |
| Canteen - Deposits and Fees | Deposits and mandatory fees, long-established | Fixed, % | Product- and rule-based targeting | See current listing |
| Magical Fees & Tariffs | Product fees and tariffs, strong content library | Fixed, % | Product and location rules | See current listing |
| UpCharge | Order and product surcharges | Fixed, % | Product and cart rules | See current listing |
| FeeBee | Product fees, deposit focus | Fixed, % | Product-based targeting | See current listing |
| Pfand - Deposit & Cart Fee / BB Pfand | German Pfand specifically | Fixed per container | Deposit products | See current listing |

Where FlexiFees stands out
- Condition breadth: 34 condition types, including HS codes, country of origin, metafields, discount-code waivers, and date and time rules.
- Rare calculations: percentage of cost for true tariff pass-through and per-kilogram for weight-scaled fees.
- Real line items with your label in cart, checkout, and on the order, plus a taxable toggle per fee.
- The Buy Now guard, so express checkout cannot bypass a mandatory fee.
- Everything on one plan with a free trial; no feature gating by tier.
Where another app may fit better
- You only need German Pfand and nothing else: a dedicated Pfand app is a perfectly good single-purpose tool.
- You want fees rendered inside the checkout UI (Plus-style checkout customization) rather than as cart line items: look at checkout-extension-based tools.
- You already run a competitor happily and only miss one small thing: switching costs may outweigh it. Our setup takes minutes if you do want to try the difference.
Recommendation by situation
| Your situation | Best fit |
|---|---|
| US compliance fees (CO/MN delivery, CRV, recycling) | FlexiFees presets, or Magical for its guides |
| Tariff pass-through on imports | FlexiFees (origin + HS code + cost-based %) |
| Only German Pfand, nothing else | A dedicated Pfand app, or FlexiFees if you may grow past deposits |
| Complex conditional logic (metafields, dates, waivers) | FlexiFees |
| Deposits with long merchant history behind the app | Canteen, or FlexiFees for wider conditions |
