Small order surcharge on Shopify
Last updated: July 18, 2026
Small orders can cost more to pick, pack, and ship than they earn. Instead of a hard minimum, charge a small order surcharge: a fixed cart fee (for example 5.00) with the condition cart subtotal is less than or equal to 50.00. Known in Germany as the Mindermengenzuschlag, it must be shown as its own line, which is exactly what FlexiFees does.
The rule in FlexiFees
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Fee title | Small order surcharge (DE stores: Mindermengenzuschlag) |
| Calculation | Fixed amount, cart fee |
| Amount | 5.00 |
| SKU | MINORDER |
| Condition | Cart subtotal is less than or equal to 50.00 |
The app ships a small order surcharge preset with this exact shape.
The German angle: Mindermengenzuschlag
German competition law and case history (the topic IT-Recht Kanzlei and e-recht24 cover at length) require the surcharge to be communicated clearly and shown separately ("gesondert ausgewiesen"), not buried in prices; hiding it risks warnings (Abmahnungen). A dedicated line item titled Mindermengenzuschlag plus a sentence on your shipping page satisfies both halves. B2B wholesalers use the same fee with higher thresholds.
Refinements
- Exempt B2B accounts: add customer tag is not one of wholesale.
- Country-specific thresholds: one fee per country group via customer country.
- Never on gift cards alone: add gift card in cart is equal to not only.
