The vocabulary of ecommerce fees, from German deposits to US state charges, each with a link to the guide that shows how to charge it on Shopify.
Pfand
The German deposit-return charge on beverage containers under the Packaging Act: 0.25 EUR for one-way (Einweg) cans and bottles, 0.08 EUR for reusable beer bottles, 0.15 EUR for most other reusable bottles. Refunded when containers are returned. Charge Pfand on Shopify.
Statiegeld
The Dutch deposit: typically 0.15 EUR on small bottles and cans, 0.25 EUR on large bottles. The Dutch sibling of Pfand, handled with a country-scoped deposit fee. See the EU deposit guide.
Pant
The Scandinavian deposit-return schemes (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland's palautuspullo), with class-based rates per container type. See the EU deposit guide.
CRV (California Redemption Value)
California's beverage container charge: 5 cents under 24 fluid ounces, 10 cents at 24 ounces or larger, 25 cents for boxed wine and pouches since 2024. Collected by retailers, generally taxable. Charge CRV on Shopify.
Bottle bill
The US term for state deposit-return laws; ten states run one. US bottle deposits on Shopify.
Retail delivery fee (RDF)
A flat per-order state fee on deliveries of taxable goods. Colorado charges 0.31 USD (July 2026 rate, adjusted each July); Minnesota charges 0.50 USD on orders of 100 USD or more under the mandated label "Road Improvement and Food Delivery Fee". Colorado guide · Minnesota guide.
Core charge
A refundable deposit on auto parts with reusable cores (alternators, starters, calipers, batteries), returned when the old unit comes back for remanufacturing. Core charges on Shopify.
EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility)
The policy family making sellers fund end-of-life handling of their products. Mattress, tire, e-waste, battery, and paint fees are all EPR programs. See the environmental fee guides.
Eco-participation
France's visible EPR fee on electronics, furniture, and more, set by eco-organism schedules (barèmes) and legally displayed separately from the price. Eco-participation on Shopify.
Mindermengenzuschlag
The German small order surcharge: a fee charged when a cart stays under a minimum value, permitted when disclosed clearly and itemized separately. Small order surcharges on Shopify.
HS code
The Harmonized System code classifying goods for customs, hierarchical by design: chapter (85), heading (8517), subheading (8517.13). Tariffs attach to these levels, which is why prefix matching matters. The HS code condition.
Country of origin
Where goods were produced, recorded per variant in Shopify's shipping settings as an ISO code; the basis of origin-dependent tariffs. The origin condition.
COGS (cost of goods sold)
What products cost the merchant, recorded in Shopify as Cost per item. Cost-based fees charge a percentage of it, matching how tariffs are actually assessed. Cost-based fees.
Line item
One row of an order: a product, a quantity, a price. FlexiFees adds fees as line items, so they are itemized in the cart, at checkout, on the order, and in reports. How fees appear.
Cart attribute
Order-level extra information a theme or app saves on the cart, such as a gift wrap or protection checkbox; readable by fee conditions. The cart attribute condition.
Line item property
Per-line extra information such as engraving text or per-item gift wrap, saved by product-page options; the key to charging only customized items. The line item property condition.
Checkout validation
A Shopify mechanism allowing checkout completion to be blocked while a condition holds, used by the Buy Now guard to stop express checkout from skipping required fees.
