Tiered handling fee by order value
Last updated: September 23, 2026
A tiered handling fee charges less as the order grows, for example 9.90 below 100.00, 5.00 from 100.00 and nothing from 200.00. In FlexiFees that is one Formula cart fee: if(subtotal >= 200, 0, if(subtotal >= 100, 5, 9.90)). The editor includes a two-tier template, Tiered by subtotal, to start from.
The rule in FlexiFees
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Fee title | Handling fee |
| Scope | Cart fee |
| Fee type | Formula |
| Formula | if(subtotal >= 200, 0, if(subtotal >= 100, 5, 9.90)) (example amounts) |
| SKU | HANDLING |
| Condition | Total Quantity in the cart is greater than or equal to 1 (every fee needs at least one condition; this one matches every order) |
Worked examples
| Cart subtotal | Tier | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| 50.00 | below 100 | 9.90 |
| 150.00 | 100 to 199.99 | 5.00 |
| 250.00 | 200 and more | no fee (a result of 0 adds no line) |
Other shapes of the same idea
- A percentage with a minimum:
max(3, 0.04 * subtotal)charges 4% but at least 3.00 (40.00: 3.00; 250.00: 10.00). The same works without a formula: a Percentage cart fee of 4% with a minimum of 3 under Fee limits (optional). - A percentage with a cap:
min(15, 0.04 * subtotal), or a Percentage fee with a maximum. - Only one threshold: for "a fee below 50, nothing above", a Fixed fee with a cart subtotal condition is simpler; see the small order surcharge.
Good to know
subtotalis the cart subtotal after discounts, without fee lines, so a discount code can move the order into a different tier.- Tiers are checked in order: write the highest threshold first, as in the formula above.
The first cart with a new amount. Calculated fees produce amounts Shopify has not seen before. The first time a new amount appears, Shopify can take a few seconds, occasionally up to about a minute, to accept the fee line; FlexiFees retries automatically and the same amount is instant afterwards.

Questions
Can a handling fee get cheaper as the order grows?
Yes. A Formula cart fee with if() sets a different amount per order value tier, and a result of 0 means no fee.
Do I need a formula for a percentage with a minimum?
No. A Percentage cart fee with a minimum under Fee limits does the same as max(3, 0.04 * subtotal).
