Customs brokerage fee on Shopify: flat fee plus a percentage
Last updated: September 23, 2026
When clearing international orders costs you a fixed amount plus a share of the order value, charge it the same way: one FlexiFees Formula cart fee such as 5 + 0.02 * subtotal, limited to customers outside your home country. A 240.00 order pays 9.80, as one line in the cart and at checkout.
The rule in FlexiFees
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Fee title | Customs brokerage fee |
| Scope | Cart fee |
| Fee type | Formula |
| Formula | 5 + 0.02 * subtotal (5.00 plus 2% of the cart subtotal; example amounts) |
| Fee limits (optional) | max: 60.00, for example |
| SKU | BROKERAGE |
| Condition | Customer country is not one of United States (your home country) |
Worked examples
| Cart subtotal | Calculation | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| 80.00 | 5 + 0.02 × 80 | 6.60 |
| 240.00 | 5 + 0.02 × 240 | 9.80 |
| 4,000.00 | 5 + 0.02 × 4,000 = 85.00, capped by max 60.00 | 60.00 |
Variants
- Only above an order value:
if(subtotal >= 800, 5 + 0.02 * subtotal, 0)charges nothing below 800.00. A result of 0 adds no fee line. - Two separate lines: a Fixed cart fee of 5.00 and a Percentage cart fee of 2%, with the same condition, if you want both parts itemized.
- A flat handling fee only: see the international order fee.
- Duties on specific goods: the tariff surcharge targets products by origin country or HS code.
Good to know
subtotalis the cart subtotal after discounts, without fee lines.- Logged-in customers are matched by the country of their default address. Guests are matched by the cart's shipping address if set, otherwise by the country the storefront detects, which can be wrong.
The first cart with a new amount. Calculated fees produce amounts Shopify has not seen before. The first time a new amount appears, Shopify can take a few seconds, occasionally up to about a minute, to accept the fee line; FlexiFees retries automatically and the same amount is instant afterwards.

Questions
Can the fee be a fixed amount plus a percentage?
Yes. A Formula cart fee like 5 + 0.02 * subtotal charges both in one line. Two separate fees (Fixed and Percentage) show them as two lines.
Can I cap the fee?
Yes. Set a maximum under Fee limits (optional), or write it into the formula with min(), for example min(60, 5 + 0.02 * subtotal).
