Heat pack & cold shipping fees on Shopify
Last updated: July 18, 2026
Sellers of live plants, reptiles, and perishables add heat packs and insulation in winter, usually as a required charge for the live-arrival guarantee. On Shopify, model it as a fixed cart fee with two conditions: product tag live-goods and a date range covering the cold months. The fee appears in season, on the right orders, by itself.
The rule in FlexiFees
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Fee title | Winter heat pack & insulation |
| Calculation | Fixed amount, cart fee (one pack per box) |
| Amount | 4.50 |
| SKU | HEATPACK |
| Conditions (match all) | Product tag is one of live-goods · Date range is between 2026-10-01 and 2027-04-30 |
Patterns sellers use
- Required in winter: exactly this rule. The community pattern of a "Winterizing Fee applicable to all orders with live goods until late April" maps onto the date range directly.
- Cold-chain by SKU: frozen food sellers key the fee on SKUs starting FRZ- instead of a tag, plus insulated packaging as a fixed fee year-round.
- Summer cooling: the same idea inverted: cold packs for chocolate from June to August.
- Destination-aware: add customer state to charge heat packs only for cold regions.
Guarantee tie-in. If the heat pack is required for your live-arrival guarantee, enable the Buy Now guard during the season so express checkout cannot skip it.
