Checkout bag fees on Shopify
Last updated: July 18, 2026
Bag laws in many states and cities mandate a minimum charge for carryout bags, and pickup or local delivery orders are often covered. On Shopify, let the customer choose bags through a theme option that writes a cart attribute, then charge a fixed cart fee when that attribute is present, limited to the jurisdictions whose law applies.
The rule in FlexiFees
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Fee title | Checkout bag fee |
| Calculation | Fixed amount, cart fee |
| Amount | Your jurisdiction's charge, for example 0.10 USD per order's bagging |
| SKU | BAG-FEE |
| Conditions (match all) | Cart attribute is one of bag:paper · Customer state is one of CO |
The cart attribute condition accepts * for any value, so bag:* charges whenever any bag type is chosen.
Design choices
- Opt-in, not automatic. The fee follows the customer's explicit bag choice, which mirrors how bag laws work at physical checkouts.
- Per-bag pricing. If your theme saves the bag count (bags:3), create fees per count value or ask us about the pattern that fits your theme.
- Local pickup only? If bags only make sense for pickup, have the theme show the bag option on pickup and the attribute does the gating.
Not tax or legal advice. Bag fee amounts, coverage of delivery orders, and remittance rules are local; verify your jurisdiction's ordinance.
