Battery recycling & stewardship fees on Shopify
Last updated: July 18, 2026 · CA battery-embedded fee per CDTFA
Battery stewardship laws increasingly add point-of-sale fees: since January 1, 2026, California requires retailers of covered battery-embedded products to collect a recycling fee. On Shopify, mark covered products with a metafield like custom.battery_embedded, create a fixed per-product fee, and limit it by customer state. The fee lands only on covered devices shipped to program states.

| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Fee title | Battery Recycling Fee |
| Calculation | Fixed amount, per product fee |
| Amount | The program's current fee |
| SKU | BATT-FEE |
| Conditions (match all) | Product metafield is one of custom.battery_embedded:true · Customer state is one of CA |
Enable Storefront access on the metafield definition so the condition can read it, then bulk-edit the flag onto covered products.
Where battery fees apply
- California (2026): covered battery-embedded products, collected by retailers including online sellers; registration via CDTFA.
- Other programs: several states and Canadian provinces run battery stewardship programs where fees are either visible at checkout or built into pricing. Where a visible fee is required or chosen, the same rule applies with that program's state or country condition.
Not tax or legal advice. Covered product definitions and amounts come from each program; verify with the CDTFA or your program operator before collecting.
