Product category condition
Last updated: September 23, 2026
The Product category (Shopify taxonomy) condition matches products by the Category field on the Shopify product page, which comes from Shopify's Standard Product Taxonomy. Choose a parent category such as Beverages and every subcategory under it (Beer, Soda, Water and so on) is covered, with no tags or lists to maintain.
Set it up
- Check that your products have the Category field set on the product page in Shopify. Products without a category are never matched by is one of.
- In the fee's conditions, add Product category (Shopify taxonomy) and choose the rule is one of or is not one of.
- Type into the search box, for example beer, cosmetics or batteries. Results show the full path, such as Food, Beverages & Tobacco > Beverages > Alcoholic Beverages > Beer.
- Pick one or more categories and save.
How matching works
- A parent covers its subcategories. Choosing Beverages also matches Beverages > Alcoholic Beverages > Beer.
- Cart fee: the fee is added when at least one product in the cart is in a chosen category (for is not one of: when none is).
- Per product fee: every line whose product is in a chosen category, or any subcategory of it, is charged.
Why use categories instead of tags or collections?
Tags and collections work well, but someone has to keep them up to date. The Category field is part of the product itself, so a new product with the right category is covered by the fee from day one. It suits fees defined by what a product is: container deposits on beverages, recycling fees on electronics or batteries.
